Owner of purscents sat at a table working with laptop drinking coffee

I’m Maame Sarpong, founder of Purscents.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself getting creative to boost my mood and break up the monotony of being stuck indoors all the time. I dabbled in painting and even tried my hand at growing vegetables. But I also discovered a newfound passion for burning candles. The positive impact on my mood was undeniable, but as the empty jars accumulated, I grappled with ideas on how to repurpose them, sparking a realisation that a more sustainable approach to candle enjoyment was not only desirable but a necessity.

Fast forward to the summer of 2021, while thinking through the practicalities of building a sustainable home fragrance brand, I found inspiration from the scents of a garden café during afternoon tea with my husband. I decided to capture those intricate scents in the home, and so driven by a commitment to creating a sustainable brand, Purscents was born.

At Purscents, we believe in more than just crafting luxurious scents. Our scents are inspired by nature, but we’re also on a mission to make a positive impact on the candle industry. Every decision, from ingredients selection to new product development is guided by the desire to reduce waste and make more sustainable choices for our products to minimise our environmental footprint.

By embracing natural fragrances, we aim to bring a sense of calm to the hectic pace of day-to-day life. Numerous studies have highlighted the benefits of aromatherapy products in promoting relaxation, alleviating stress, elevating mood, and improving sleep. What better way to unwind than by lighting a candle as you immerse yourself in a favourite book, enjoy a bubble bath, or simply take a moment for yourself?

And the joy multiplies when you realise that your scents are not just a personal indulgence but also sustainable. Breathe new life into your empty jars, contributing to a more environmentally conscious lifestyle while enjoying the lingering essence of our carefully crafted scents.

Our Brand Values

We’re not perfect, far from it actually. But we’re genuine in what we aim to do. We want to be recognised for our actions, not just our talk that is why our core brand values include:

Quality – Produced in small batches and using the highest quality ingredients to create luxurious aromatherapy products to refresh the home and enhance your wellbeing.

Impact & Sustainability – Committed to being a sustainable brand, we prioritise the use of ingredients that are either safe or have a low carbon footprint on the environment. Additionally, we employ responsible freight forwarders to further minimise our impact. We actively promote the reuse and recycling of all our packaging through education and innovative product development, aiming to continually reduce our environmental footprint.

Responsibility – We are a living wage business committed to building a socially responsible company. As part of our commitment, we will donate 10% of our annual profits to select charities or social initiatives in our local borough of Lewisham and in Ghana

Best customer satisfaction – Our customers are the most valuable part of our business.  Providing the highest levels of customer service is our utmost priority.

Our Ingredients

Environmental issues are close to my heart, rooted in experiences from my home country, Ghana – a country impacted by deforestation and plastic waste pollution. I’ve witnessed how lives are shaped by these challenges. That is why I do my best to ensure our ingredients are sustainably sourced, vegan-friendly, and cruelty-free, which means that we never use synthetics, phthalates, dyes, lead, petroleum, paraffin or hidden toxic ingredients. All our components are either recycled, recyclable, reusable, compostable or biodegradable and our zero waste objective is the driving force behind everything we do.

Rapeseed and Coconut wax on black slate

100% plant-based blend of rapeseed and coconut wax. Unlike soy, rapeseed grows in the UK and in Europe and so it has a low carbon footprint and coconut is harvested by hand and doesn’t require pesticides or fertilizer. Our wax is biodegradable, and offers a clean, long-lasting burn.

Our rapeseed wax is sourced from Europe, whilst most of the coconut used in our waxes comes from smallholder farmers in the Philippines or Indonesia. There is no forest removal in order to plant new coconut trees and all farming contacts are closely monitored by our suppliers in that regard.

100% vegetable glycerin derived from renewable sources.  It is vegan, cruelty free, biodegradable and not harmful to human, animals, or the environment.
